This research discusses symbolism in selected Ateso proverbs so as to expose the meaning of what each of them represents. Since most proverbs have symbols that are used to represent something else, it brings out the defamiliarisation in language. Different Ateso proverbs have deeper meanings in them and this is only achieved by the use of familiar symbols around the Teso community. Through these symbols, meaning can easily be derived and the uniqueness of the Teso people is seen.en_US
