The factors associated with participation in strikes among students at Makerere University, Main Campus
Abstract
A study conducted to assess the factors associated with participation in strikes, assess the consequences of strikes among the Makerere university students and the relationship between participation in strikes and independent variables. This study was inspired by the need to find out why Makerere students are continuously involved in strike actions that have on several occasions caused University close down. Primary data was collected through sample survey design which was appropriate because of the cross-sectional nature of data and a total of 794 questionnaire forms were collected using online Google forms. Respondents were made up of males and females, and spread across several collages namely; College Of Agricultural And Environmental Sciences, College Of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology, College of Education And External Studies, College of Health Sciences, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College Of Business And Management Sciences, College Of Computing And Information Sciences, College Of Natural Sciences, School Of Law, And College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources And Biosecurity. Most of the respondents (79.43%) were under 25 years of age, majority (68.73%) of the respondents were single. Similarly, most of the respondents (45.36%) were year three students. Furthermore, study indicates that majority (41.06%) of the respondents were commuting. The Data was then analyzed using STATA statistics software; univariate, bivariate and multivariate. Results of the study revealed that there was a significant relationship between participation in strikes among Makerere University students and socio-demographic, political and socio-economic factors
