The study also sought to identify the existing solid waste management practices and their performance as well as identify the factors that influence their performance plus the challenges faced by the people of Nakulabye in the managing the waste and thus suggesting ways of addressing the challenges in order to improve the performance of the waste management practices. In this study, discussions and interviews were held with both local residents, market vendors of Nakulabye market, individuals of the private company that provide waste collection services in Nakulabye, observations and independent analysis of the results made. With funding, it has been found that there can be improvements in the management system of solid waste of solid waste in Nakulabye. In chapter one of this report, the background, research problem and objectives of the study have been clearly defined. Chapter two includes the literature review focusing on all knowledge related to the management of waste. Chapter three concerns with the methodology that was used, sample population considered and all the techniques and instruments used in the collection of data. Chapter four concerns with the study area findings, data generated and also well represented using the graphs and pie charts. It also includes the discussion of the findings which includes the existing Solid Waste Management systems/ practices in Nakulabye that is; landfilling, composting, recycling and incineration, which do not effectively take care of all waste generated in the area. The supposedly low performance rate is due to some factors within the systems that influence the performance of the waste management practices which include weak laws governing Solid Waste Management, lack of waste segregation both at generation and final disposal, high costs, delay of collection of waste. Chapter five includes the measures to be taken to address the challenges faced in Nakulabye include formulating stringent laws regarding Solid Waste Management, mass sensitization on waste management especially in homes and market areas, introduction of communal pits for the residents in Nakulabye.en_US
