This report is as a result of the final year project titled, “Design and fabrication of an automatic coil winding machine.” that was started on 16th February, 2022 and was concluded on 16th September, 2022. This is a prerequisite for graduation from engineering school with a degree Bachelor’s of science in mechanical engineering. This report explains how the project was executed detailing the methods that were used to make it a success. To achieve this, field visits were carried out to some places where coil winding is being carried and methods used wind. Observations were made and interviews carried out from those places. Literature was also reviewed to examine the research of individuals and companies who invested time and other resources concerning coil winding technology. From this the design requirements of a coil winding machine were determined. A program was developed using Arduino IDE to automate the coil winding process, most especially the counting of the number of turns. This followed through a series of steps which included the defining the problem, planning a solution (algorithm), coding the program, and documentation of the same. The components of the demo prototype were designed in Solid edge V16 software package and then fabricated by additive manufacturing (3D printing) and after fastened with nuts and bolts. The project was successful. The demo prototype was able to wind coils, but most importantly the automation of the counting of the number of turn was achieved. This was the focus of this project as per the comment that was given to me by the panel while at the proposal stage.en_US
