Female gender stereotypes in Nubian wedding songs

Abstract

The study covered female gender stereotypes as portrayed in Nubian wedding songs with Bombo town council as the case study. It was propelled by the desire to find out the stereotypes that have been for a long time attached to the female gender when it comes to marriage from the very beginning of the marriage itself as depicted in the wedding songs.

The study indicates women as a “thing”, a domestic worker, an object for negotiation and a property to their husbands after marriage. It is as well noted that Nubian community is highly patriarchal in nature and dominated by men who are depicted as the providers and home managers. The female gender thus in the Nubian society lives under the shadows of men with limited power of decision making. As a way forward, this study aims at looking at only female gender stereotypes and it should be recommended for further studies on the same subject and aim at stopping the unrealistic portrayal of the female gender which I think is highly biased and stereotypical in nature because women do more than what is actually acknowledged and mentioned in the Nubian wedding songs and this is due to the male chauvinistic society our minds are still locked in. both genders can co-exist in the same society equally with no one above the other except God above us all.
