Abstract
The objective of the study was to investigate the socio-demographic, internal and external factors associated with poor garbage disposal in Kasubi ward, Rubaga division. The study used a sample of 96 Households living in Kasubi Parish using a questionnaire approach designed in kobo tool box. Stratified Sampling method was used and simple random sampling was used to reach out sample households within each strata. Data cleaning was done using excel and STATA and later analyzed using STATA software. Chi square and Logistic Regression method were used to analyze the determinants associated with poor garbage disposal.
The Poor waste management in Uganda was mainly Influenced by the reluctance in the waste management policy implementation, Limited awareness of health hazards, reluctance of the government to sensitize people about proper waste disposal in different households.
The study findings revealed majority of the respondents were females (59.57%) and majority had completed university/ Tertiary education (59.56%), most households were not aware of health hazard associated with poor garbage disposal (80.85%). The study findings also revealed that males were 0.4585 times less than females in rating of poor garbage disposal practices (OR=0.4585) and had significant association with rating of garbage disposal (p=0.034). Also, there was a significant relationship between the body in charge of garbage collection and rating of garbage disposal (p = 0.025) and the odds of poor garbage disposal rating were 2.643 times higher where households themselves were in charge of garbage collection compared to where the government was in charge of garbage collection (OR=2.643, p=0.024).
Lastly, some of the variables showed a statistical significance since their p-values were less than p (0.05) and therefore had influence on the respondent’s rating of poor garbage disposal practices in the community.
Therefore age, gender, education level, means of transportation of garbage and sensitization of people on proper waste disposal had a significant impact on poor garbage disposal among residents of Kasubi parish, Rubaga division.
The study recommended that sensitization of people on proper garbage disposal practices should be encouraged. This can be done through incorporating waste management education in the school curriculum, through media platforms among others and should strengthen its waste management policies and invest in communal waste management programs and projects.
