The study sought to examine the Information Retrieval System in COCIS library, Makerere
University. It was guided by the following specific objectives; identify existing Information
Retrieval System used in COCIS library, Makerere University, identify the challenges associated
with the current Information Retrieval System used in COCIS library, Makerere University,
review literature and identify the requirements for designing an Information Retrieval System for
COCIS library, Makerere University as well as designing and implementing an Information
Retrieval System for COCIS library, Makerere university. The researchers interviewed the
librarian about the current Information Retrieval System which is the Online Public Access
Catalogue (OPAC). The questionnaire guide was used when identifying the challenges
associated with the current Information Retrieval System. Literature was reviewed basing on the
study objectives. The requirements for designing an Information Retrieval System were both
functional and non- functional. The researchers designed an Information Retrieval System using
Dreamweaver, Java script, CSS, PHP and MySQL. Basing on the instruments used for data
collection, a response rate of 85.7% and 14.3% was found to be suitable for the study.
The researchers found out that the current Information Retrieval System used in COCIS library is
the OPAC. In conclusion, the researchers came up with a proposed Information Retrieval System
for COCIS library. Recommendations were also made to the library staff and students.
