The image of women as represented in selected Buganda folktales.

Abstract

In this research, I focused on the image of women as represented in selected Buganda folktales. In most cases, when a reader finds an article regarding the image of women in an African setting, he or she clearly thinks of the negative portrayal of women. In this research, my focus is not limited only on the negative portrayal of women but shows the incidents where by women are seen in the positive image. I used a number of methods to put the data together and these include, field works and interviews by use of purposive sampling to pick out the people that were interviewed. In the fieldwork, I selected both male and female interviewees so as to get the opinions of both parties to ascertain whether the position of women was both negative and positive. Due to the fact that it came out both negative and positive, I managed to successfully focus on the portrayal of women while basing on the two sides. After the fieldwork, I collected enough folktales that gave me a wide number of examples that I went ahead to include in the research as examples to show that women are portrayed both negatively and positively as seen in the selected Buganda folktales.
