Factors influencing modern contraceptive use amongst women in the reproductive age group in Karamoja Region

Abstract

Background: Family planning programs have recently become priority and fundamental due to the rising fertility rates in different areas basically in sub Saharan Africa and Uganda in specific. The evolution of family planning in particular the modern methods was to raise the efficacy and efficiency of the control. This study further examines the relationship of background and proximate factors and their determinacy towards modern contraceptive use in the region. Objectives: With the low rate of contraceptive prevalence in the region, the research is based on the reasons that are responsible for the low contraceptive use in the region, and the way how it’s relating to the background and proximate factors. Furthermore the research is aimed at showing the significance of the different factors in relation to the use of the modern contraceptives in Karamoja Methods: The data that was used is secondary data from the Uganda Demographic Health Survey conducted in 2016. I used the female dataset. It was further based on the 739 women in the region. Univariate analysis was conducted among selected variables and the analysis was done using STATA 15 Results: 94.15% are not using any contraceptive method, 0.54% are using iuds, 1.63% using injection, 0.41% using female sterilization, 2.31% using implants in the region and 0.95 had male condoms by their partners. Conclusion: Family planning specifically the modern contraceptive methods are highly efficient but their efficacy is not properly at use since according to research, the region has a low prevalence rate attributed to a number of factors. It’s notable that little emphasis has been put towards the different factors that influence the use of the modern contraceptive methods despite of the fact that there has been arise in the accessibility of these services. Karamoja region still has a number of challenges that implicitly influence contraceptive use and need further directives or organization from the government.
