As times change, the need for various types of spaces diminishes. These buildings, whose function is no longer required, become subjects of abandonment. In many situations, the types of buildings most likely to be forgotten include industrial buildings, political buildings and community buildings. One of the possible lifelines for such buildings is adaptive reuse as it confirms their presencein the neighborhood. By doing so, one less building is added to the urban fabric and there is a lesser negative impact on the environment. The context, though undergoing change, can still hold onto a bit of its past. Adaptive reuse enables the conversion of existing, outdated buildings and sites into new, mixed-use developments that will play an essential role in enhancing local communities. Adaptive reuse, when done correctly, will ensure that while the building is functional it remains true to its spirit. Also, while the identity of the building undergoes transformation it still retains its integrity Recently, many buildings in the Uganda have been retired because of a number of reasons like the environmental regulations etc. Through adaptive reuse, abandoned buildings can contribute to life enhancement as a new source of interest for the community. This research explores the analyzing several specific adaptive reuse projects, this research describes what potential values are in those projects and why it is important to focus on abandoned buildings for urban sustainability. This research conducts a literature review on sustainability of adaptive reuse based on, environmental, and social values. The findings of this research show illustrate the positive effects of adaptive reuse. Through analysis of the case studies, this research proposes that the sustainable adaptive reuse of buildings has great potential in Uganda. The study finally recommends ways of effectively adapting industrial buildings to new uses and how to best go about the whole process.en_US
