Symbolism in proverbs among the Baganda: a case study of the Kiganda proverbs

Abstract

This study looks at proverbs about friends and close relatives among the Baganda in Central Uganda. It asserts that a proverb refers to one of the most vital types of oral Literature of the Baganda on which this study bases. This study aims at fostering the promotion of the cultural background of people as well as boosting people's love and interest for African oral Literature, proverbs in particular. It portrays proverbs about friends and their close relatives, the modes in which proverbs we're developed, as well as the moral lessons drawn from the subsequent proverbs. This study also focuses on the way proverbs employ symbols to derive meaning of a proverb. It will focus on finding out what makes proverbs an important genre of oral Literature. This will be proven right with the proverb's capacity to draw a lot of meaning and also develop moral lessons for the young ones. This study will clearly depict the reason as to why the Baganda highly valued and still value proverbs up to date.
