This study intensively explores the effectiveness of symbolism in selected proverbs in Acholi. The study specially looks at the effectiveness of symbolism in selected proverbs in Acholi which includes the moral lessons, themes, and characterization. As such, the topic brings out importance of symbolism in the selected proverbs in Acholi. According to the researches made, proverbs occupy a central place in the Acholi culture and they are highly descriptive. The proverbs are usually told to the young people of the family by the elders during night gatherings under the tree, or at the fireplace locally known as Wang oo in Acholi language. This is done to educate and advice them in their daily life. Proverbs are basically expressions or sayings based on common sense or some expressions. They are usually nothing but common and traditional sayings which explain some truth. They are metaphorical in nature. Therefore, the origin lies in local or universal truths and principles. As such, my study seeks for the effectiveness of symbolism in selected Acholi proverbs. This comes along with the lessons, themes, and characterization.en_US
