Currently in Uganda there is no formalized way for ex-prisoners to be transitioned back into ordinary life, save for the efforts of the prison system which are less than ideal, given that they are designed to alienate the individuals. This is further compounded by the fact that prison life in itself is a stark contrast to ordinary life and this further complicates the process of reintegration. This study is done in partial fulfillment for the award of a Bachelor of Architecture degree and it was conducted over a period of 13 weeks. This research aimed to investigate and find out how architectural design can be employed as to tool to aid the process of reintegration of ex-prisoners. This study has to potential to provide an understanding of how we can design restorative/ rehabilitative spaces to aid the reintegration process. Through this study we may be able to engage various stakeholders and rally for a collective effort to manage this transition. The research takes place at a time when mental health awareness and issues are at the forefront of the public conscience. A qualitative approach was taken to collect the necessary data and information including use of direct observation, photography, document study and use of open-ended interviews. Previous literature on concepts and theories surrounding the research topic were analysed and this gave rise to a conceptual framework that was vital in understanding how facets of architectural design can be used to aid the reintegration process of ex-prisoners. The research categorized the main architectural concepts under Spatial quality, spatial protection, composition and therapeutic milieu in space use. Recommendations for design under those concepts were provided in the conclusion chapter and the guidelines suggested can be utilized in the creation of post-incarceration centers to aid ex-prisoner reintegration.en_US
