GSM based LPG leakage detection, fire detection and extinguishing system with BLYNK app monitoring.
Abstract
Liquefied petroleum gas is a mixture of hydrocarbon gases used as a fuel in heating appliances and
vehicles. Households use LPG as cooking fuel which is supplied to homes either in pressurized
cylinders or through pipes. LPG can be used as a power source for combined heat and power
technologies. This technology has allowed LPG to be used not just as fuel for heating and cooking,
but also for decentralized generation of electricity. However, unlike natural gas, LPG is heavier than
air and thus in case of any LPG leakage, it can flow along floors and tend to settle in lower spots,
such as basements. There are two main dangers from this: Possible explosion if mixture of LPG and
air is right and if there is an ignition source.
This might cause dangerous fire outbreaks that may lead to loss of people’s lives and property for
example the Royal suite Hotel in Kampala that caught fire after LPG explosion in May 25, 2012.
Suffocation due to LPG displacing air, causing a decrease in oxygen concentration which can easily
put people’s lives in trouble.
Therefore, due to the above-mentioned problem, this calls for an immediate solution to prevent the
hazardous outcomes from happening through the design and implementation of a GSM based LPG
detector using Atmega328p that is in position to detect any gas leakage and fire flames, alert the
nearby personnel through sounding a buzzer, switches on an exhaust fan to throw the gas outside
the windows for just gas leakage, triggers the valve of the gas regulator to stop further gas leakage,
calls the concerned personnel for immediate rectification of the problem and turns on a fire
extinguisher in case of fire.
When gas level is below 50% and there isn’t a fire, the LCD shows gas state normal and fire state
normal. When the gas surpasses 50%, the microcontroller turns on the buzzer, the fan and controls
the gas servo to turn off gas supply. It also calls the person concerned and immediately sends alert
on the Blynk app.
In case of fire, the microcontroller turns on buzzer, controls the fire servo motor to trigger the
nozzle of fire extinguisher, and calls and makes an alert of the Blynk app. The concerned personnel
can monitor the system from the Blynk app.
