This dissertation explores the use of sarcasm in Ganda folktales. Through an analysis of a diverse selection of folktales, it examines the ways in which sarcasm functions as a communicative tool among characters, highlighting the social and cultural context that underlies its use. The study also investigates the potential effects of sarcasm on the listener, including how it can create humor, reveal power dynamics, and challenge social norms. Ultimately, the dissertation aims to shed light on the complex role that sarcasm plays in Ganda folklore and to contribute to the wider literature on the use of irony and other forms of indirect communication in oral traditions. The research involved the collection and analysis of six Ganda folktales from various sources, including interviews with traditional storytellers and literary texts. The findings of the study reveal that sarcasm is often used in Ganda folktales to criticize social norms, hierarchies, and power relations, as well as to challenge stereotypes and prejudices. Sarcasm is also used as a means of entertainment, humor, and social commentary, as well as a tool for moral education and cultural transmission. The study shows that sarcasm is a key feature of Ganda folklore and is deeply embedded in the cultural and linguistic practices of the community. In conclusion, the study suggests that the use of sarcasm in Ganda folktales reflects the complexity, diversity, and richness of African oral literature, and provides valuable insights into the cultural, social, and political realities of the community.en_US
