Design of a road safety and vehicle accident prevention system.
Abstract
On road, accident is a major issue of concern. Even with all modern developments in the field of
vehicle design, road lane and management, accidents still occur all the time. Authentic data about
road accidents is not available but still preliminary data indicate that Kampala roads are witnessing
higher incidences of road accidents. In today's modern era road and transport has become a central
part of every human being. Everyone is a road user in one way or the other. Accidents on roads
can be prevented by better understanding of the psychological state of a driver who is in-charge of
the wheel and a smart system for accident prevention is an ideal concept for this problem.
We came up with the methodology where a comprehensive evaluation of existing road safety
systems was conducted to assess their strengths, weaknesses, and limitations. This involved a
thorough literature review, analysis of research papers, case studies, and industry reports to gain
insights into the current state-of-the-art in road safety and accident prevention. Stakeholder
engagement was an integral part of this process, involving discussions with road safety authorities,
traffic management departments, and law enforcement agencies like the Uganda police. The
feedback and requirements obtained from research papers and stakeholders were carefully
documented and formed the basis for the requirements of the proposed system.
The selection of sensors was based on the identified requirements, considering factors such as
accuracy, cost, reliability, and compatibility with the proposed system. Sensors such as Infrared
sensor, alcohol detector, Ultrasonic sensor, Tilt sensor and opto-coupler sensor were evaluated and
integrated into the overall system architecture. The establishment of these sensors played a crucial
role in providing real-time data and inputs for accurate analysis and decision-making by the driver.
To enable the implementation of various safety features and response actions, a programmable
system was established as a core component of the road safety and vehicle accident prevention
system. This programmable system played a crucial role in processing sensor data, executing
control algorithms, and initiating appropriate responses in real-time. To provide essential
information to drivers, an LCD was incorporated into the road safety and vehicle accident
prevention system. The LCD display served as an intuitive and user-friendly interface, presenting
real-time information and alerts in a clear and easily understandable format.
We recommend for continuous improvement, public awareness and education, integration with
Intelligent Transportation Systems and also collaboration with Government and Regulatory
Bodies.
Further, the road safety and vehicle accident prevention system represents a significant
advancement in leveraging technology to enhance road safety. With its comprehensive approach,
real-time monitoring, and responsive mechanisms, the system has the potential to significantly
reduce accidents, save lives, and create a safer and more secure transportation environment for all
road users.
