A study of symbolism and hyperbole in use of proverbs: a case study of selected Ateso proverbs
Abstract
The research was carried out in Iteso community a case study of Bukedea District. This study was intended to examine the use of proverbs among the Iteso people. It focused on the identification of several proverbs that employ the use of hyperbole and symbolism to enhance their meaning and when and how these proverbs are used in the Iteso community. The study discovered that the use of proverbs varied from community to another and each and every proverbs serves different purpose depending on the context. The Iteso consider proverbs as an essential and vital tool of communication through which both the young and the elderly are educated, morals and good discipline is instilled to the people in the community as well as entertainment purposes. The research indicated that proverbs were used in the community intentionally and to achieve a certain purpose to the intended audience.
