Factors influencing the choice of energy sources among restaurants: a case study of Makerere Kikoni

This study focuses on localized research in the restaurant industry of Makerere Kikoni, Uganda, addressing energy source choices. Despite its energy consumption and economic significance, the area lacks data and strategies for sustainable energy practices. The study explores factors influencing energy source choices, including accessibility, reasons, and risks. It provides insights for restaurant owners, policymakers, and stakeholders to enhance energy efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impact, bridging a critical knowledge gap and promoting sustainability. The study uses a cross-sectional approach in Makerere Kikoni, Uganda, collecting quantitative data through structured questionnaires from local restaurants. The sample size is determined using the Cochran formula. Data analysis involves univariate, bivariate analyses, and binary logistic regression. Ethical considerations ensure consent and confidentiality, maintaining gender balance. Limitations include response bias, causation limitations, and limited generalizability. Questionnaires in Kobo Collect ensure rigorous data collection and analysis, addressing potential limitations. The study in Makerere Kikoni's restaurants uncovers a diverse energy landscape with charcoal as the dominant choice due to affordability. Electricity and solar energy, though cleaner, have limited adoption due to cost considerations. Environmental sustainability, energy source reliability, and accessibility are key factors influencing choices, highlighting the importance of environmental consciousness and infrastructure development for renewables. Gender and energy efficiency show limited impact. Targeted efforts are needed to promote sustainable energy while addressing unique source challenges.
