Irrational drives in Ateso folktales
Abstract
This study explores the irrational drives in Ateso folktales through examining the characters and the character traits that are revealed as they react to several situations in which they find themselves. These differences are brought out by the irrational drives. The study also looks at how diction is used to effectively bring out the idea of the drives. Drawing on psychoanalytic theories by Sigmund Freud, the research analyzes Ateso folktales to reveal the ways in which characters are driven by desires and fears that operate outside of conscious awareness. The research examines the roles played by such drives as; desire, aggression, and the death drive, and consider the implications of these drives. Ultimately, the research argues that an understanding of the irrational drives sheds light on the cultural values and psychological realities of the Ateso people. community.
