dc.description.abstractThe study investigated the relationship between Smart phone addiction, sleep quality and Academic performance of Makerere University Undergraduate students. The study relied on the following objectives, This study aimed at examining the relationship between smart phone addiction, sleep quality and academic performance of Makerere University undergraduate students. The study was guided by the following objectives To determine the relationship between sleep quality and academic performance. To ascertain the relationship between smartphone addiction and academic performance of students. To establish the relationship between smart phone addiction and sleep quality among students. A cross sectional study design was used to establish the relationship between smart phone addiction, sleep quality and academic performance of Makerere University undergraduate students, using statistical package STATA 16. Study findings revealed that under smartphone Use and Academic Performance: There was a significant relationship between smartphone use while studying and overall academic performance. Students who use smartphones almost always or frequently while studying tend to have lower academic performance (13.8% and 1.5%, respectively) compared to those who use smartphones rarely or occasionally while studying (43.1% and 8.8%, respectively) Under Sleep Quality and Academic Performance: There was a significant relationship between sleep quality and academic performance. Students with excellent sleep quality (56.1%) tend to have better academic performance, while those with poor sleep quality (13.4%) often perform worse academically. Under Smartphone Use and Sleep Quality: There was a significant relationship between smartphone use while studying and sleep quality. Students who use smartphones almost always or frequently while studying (75.5% and 13.2%, respectively) are more likely to experience poor sleep quality compared to those who use smartphones rarely or occasionally while studying (5.4% and 11.3%, respectively).The study recommends; The study recommends Promotion of Smartphone Awareness. Educational institutions should conduct awareness campaigns on the negative effects of excessive smartphone use on academic performance. Students should be educated on the importance of managing their smartphone use during study hours and before sleep to improve their academic outcomes. Sleep Hygiene Education. Institutions should provide information on sleep hygiene practices, emphasizing the importance of a consistent sleep schedule, minimizing smartphone use before bedtime and creating a conducive sleep environment. Introduction of Smartphone-Free Study Zones. Establishing smartphone-free study zones on campus can encourage students to focus better on their studies without distractions from their devices. Encourage Self-Regulation. Students should be encouraged to self-regulate their smartphone use, setting limits on screen time during study hours and before sleep.en_US
