Factors affecting the academic performance of undergraduate students at Makerere University: a case study of SSP students

Abstract

The research study carried on factors affecting academic performance of undergraduate students of school of statistics and planning at Makerere University Kampala Uganda. The research study comprised of 60 respondents which was selected using Keish Leslie formula (1965) for simple random sampling where the total population was unknown. The researcher selected all the respondents using simple random sampling to draw representative of a sample since it gives everyone an equal chance of selection. ANOVA and A multiple linear regression model were used to bring out a clear pattern and relationships of the factors affecting the undergraduate student’s academic performance (Dependent variable) which is measured at average CGPA scored at end of year academic program. Age has significant impact on student’s academic performance which is indicated by P value < 0.05. e.g. (0.047<0.05). Parent’s education status impacts student’s performance is statistically significant as P value is less than 0.05 i.e. 0.043< 0.05). The research study recommended that Parents should have interest in their children’s education. This is because students would perform better academically with parent’s involvement. Government need to provide student’s loan scheme at low interest rates to the needy students because majority of the parent are not able to pay tuition on time due to irregular low income and poverty.
