Design and simulation of a drainage channel rubbish trap
Abstract
Solid waste management is still a challenge in Uganda which leads to some of the waste
ending up in drainage channels on rainy days and clogging them leading to road floods.
This report contains objectives of determining requirements, obtaining a preliminary and a
detailed design of the trap and lastly, simulating the trap.
The methodologies used to achieve the project objectives included data collection methods,
data analysis, design, and simulation through motion simulations and Force analysis/ Finite
Element Analysis (FEA. The trap was designed and simulated using Solidworks software.
The trap consists of an inlet followed by the sedimentation chamber to allow time for the soil
and all the materials that are denser than water to sink and then a mesh to restrict the motion
of rubbish downstream and lastly an outflow to channel out the filtered water.
Results obtained included the different velocities and pressures at key points in the trap and a
stress analysis on the mesh which was the most affected part by the water pressure.
In conclusion, based off the collected data, a trap was designed, simulated and results obtained
from the simulation
