The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into blood tracking systems has significantly affected the safety, efficiency, and accessibility of the blood supply chain. The current system at UBTS relies on manual and electronic methods but it is not effectively tracking and managing the blood inventory levels. This study focuses on developing a web-based tracking and monitoring system for blood and blood products at Nakasero Blood Bank in Kampala, Uganda.
The study's significance lies in its benefits to stakeholders, including the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS), hospitals, recipients, and other beneficiaries. UBTS will gain a complete and transparent system, aiding in predicting facility usage for planning. Hospitals will benefit from faster requisition processes and easier inventory management. Recipients can employ the use of the system to reach out to specific donors during emergencies. Data was collected using interviews and questionnaire methods and tools like self-administered questionnaires and interview guides, which were used for collecting data from respondents. The collected primary data was analyzed in two ways which included narrative and context analysis and the user requirements were determined.
The system as well was designed and implemented using different tools which included HTML and React js for designing the front end, java script for validation, XAMPP for providing MySQL database and LARAVEL as the php framework for receiving requests from react frontend. Unit testing was implemented to ensure the system components work and there are errors in the system performance.
