Analysis of safety issues associated with pedestrian usage of the Kampala express ways: a case study of the Kampala northern by-pass.
Abstract
The research is basically about finding out how safe it is for pedestrians to use the Kampala Northern by pass. The researcher first identified the methods of data collection to be used, both qualitative and quantitative methods of data analysis are considered. The research employed various research methods like observation, interviewing, photography.
From the research conducted with the guide of the objectives of the study, the pedestrian infrastructure on the Northern by pass was identified which include; the foot bridges, crossing marks like zebra crossing, surveillance camera, street lights, rails, walkways, built shelter, shoulders.
The research also identified challenges faced by the pedestrians who use areas with these pedestrian facilities and the challenges faced by those who use areas that are not served were also identified among which included the difficulties in crossing the road amidst the speedy vehicular traffic.
Also recommendations and conclusions are drawn to wrap up the research which included recommendation to the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), Recommendations to the government and finally the recommendations to the pedestrians which included widening of the walk ways, installing of surveillance camera, installing of street lights, construction of more foot bridges ,putting more street lights in areas that are not served like Kalerwe, covering of the drainage channel near the walk ways and shoulders, and deploying police to patrol on the road especially the late evening and night hours.
