The effect of the income of the household head on the education of the children aged 6-18 years: a case study of Katanga area
Abstract
The study sought to examine the effect of income of the household head on the education of
children aged 6-18 years and the case study was Katanga area. The specific objectives of the
study were ; to assess the impact of the household size on the education of the children, to
determine the impact of education of the household head on the education of the children and
to examine the effect of the occupation of the household head on the education of the
children.
The study employed both qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the data. Data was
analyzed using descriptive statistics. Qualitative approach provided ways of discerning,
examining, comparing and contrasting, and interpreting meaningful patterns ot themes.
Qualitative approach involved examinimg the assembled relevant data to determine how
research questions were answered at hand. Quantitative data analysis helped me to analyze
and categorize frequencies and percentages. Simple descriptive tabulations were used for
quantitative analysis.
I used primary data where Questionnaire method was used to collect data from household
heads regarding these variables. The main method of data collection was semi-structured
questionnaire administered to 136 household heads. Being in school and not in school were
used as a measure of education of children. The data were analysed using logistic regression
and the results showed that variables like age, sex, average monthly income affected the
education status of children.
