An assessment on the causes and effects of informal industrial establishment in lira city east division, lira city.
Abstract
This is a study on informal industrial establishment in Lira City East division. The study focusses
on the causes and effects of informal industrial establishment in Lira City East Division. A survey
questionnaire was used to collect data in Lira City East Division especially in in Railways Quarters
ward, Baronger ward and Ayago ward. Besides that, verbal interviews were held in connection
with the technical staff from Lira City Council such as the Acting Physical Planner, City Engineer,
Environment officer, Enforcement officer, Town agents as far as the location of informal
industries, attempts made by the City Council to phase-out informal industries the issues of taxes
paid by informal developers in Lira City east division.
The target population for this study was mainly selected from the study area consisting of the
Technical team from Lira City Council and Lira City East Division, politicians, Local Council
leaders, developers and informal industrial operators in Lira City East Division especially in
Railways quarters, Baronger and Agago ward.
The questioners, Interview guides were developed and administered for data collection in the area
of study. Data analysis employed mixed methods to address the needs of qualitative and
quantitative data. Arc GIS, SPSS and Microsoft Excel were used to analyze data. Results revealed
great differences in the level of understanding of the causes and effects of informal industrial
establishment in the area of study. According to the study, the people who were interviewed
revealed that all the technical and political teams knows that informal industries exist in the area
of study and among all the types of informal industries existing in the area brewing is the most
dominant types being conducted by people in the area which has a number of significant effects
on the environment such as pollution of wetlands, rusting of iron sheets, damaging of roads, poor
waste management among. However, the challenges caused as a result of informal industrial
establishment in the area of study can be combated through sensitization of informal industrial
operators, proper implementation of the approved Physical development plan of the City Council
and also gazeting places for informal industrial establishment since they contribute to the nation
building through the creation of jobs and payment of revenue to the City Council.
