Assessing the impact of urban sprawl on orderly development in greater Kampala metropolitan area. A case study of Kyengera town council in Wakiso district.
Abstract
Uganda has been grappling with a number of challenges regarding urban sprawl due to the increase in the population rate in cities and towns. This forces people to end up shifting to the suburb areas or the areas that are outside the towns or the cities because the prices of land in these areas is a bit cheaper compared to the city/ town centers.
This therefore led to conduction of a research study whose objectives were to identify the factors responsible for urban sprawl in the study area, find out the impacts of urban sprawl on orderly development in the study area, analyze the trend of urban sprawl in study area over time and to suggest possible solutions to the challenges associated with urban sprawl in the study area. There were different methods used during the collection of data and they include observation, interviewing, administering questionnaires, online research to mention but a few.
According to the study, the causes of urban sprawl include congestion in the CBD, increased use of automobiles, pollution in the CBD among others, lower land rates in the suburbs, improved infrastructure in the suburbs, overcrowding in Kitemu CBD to mention but a few..
There are various impacts that have been brought about by urban sprawl in Kyengera town council. They include increased government expenditure, increased use of auto mobiles, encroachment on the wetlands and encroachment on agricultural land. The researcher analyzed the trends of urban sprawl in Kyengera town council over three time bands from the year 2007, 2007-2015 and 20152022. Recommendations were later given in regard to the findings and they included preparation of the physical development plan to control developments in the area, zoning of the area use of vertical development among others and explained in this research study
The research contains five chapters and each chapter details a specific theme based on the research objectives. The chapters stand on their own though intertwined to give a chronological flow from the introduction and background, literature review, research methodology, research findings, recommendations as well as conclusion.
