Influence of mother language on students' performance in written English at the primary sector in selected primary schools in Wakiso district
Abstract
This project is about the influence of the mother tongue on the performance of students
written English at the primary level in selected primary schools in Wakiso district. The
selected schools in this case are St. Yowana Maria Mzee and Kasengejje Church of
Uganda Primary schools which are government schools. And then wakiso
Integrated Primary School and Destiny Bridge Primary school, which are private schools. Focused
Group discussions were used to obtain primary data from the students. The
Researchers set out to administer questionnaires to some teachers at all four schools
Connection with the influence of the mother tongue on the performance of students in
written English in the primary sector.
During the study, the researcher found that there is an influence of the native language on the
performance of the students. It was also found that most students both within
as well as speaking Luganda outside of class, which has a negative impact on written and
spoken English affects.
In summary, it was found that there was a significant connection between the
Impairment of the mother tongue and students' performance in written language
exists in the primary area. The researcher's recommendations included that teachers be strict and
should be aware of the influence of Luganda on students' written English.
Students should also be encouraged by their English teachers to adopt the reading culture
to accustom.
