A simulation model for a biogas purification process using membrane technology in Aspen plus at scoul
Abstract
In the project a simulation of the operation unites required to purify biogas by membrane technology was developed in aspen plus and used to calculate material balances and estimate equipment and installation costs. Using other relevant studied, it was found that purities of >96% can be produced with membrane technology. It was found that membrane technology had advantages of lower energy consumption, good selectivity, easily engineered modules, and high purity CO2 was also obtained. It was found that aspen plus alone was inefficient for membrane technology modeling and that better models for the activated carbon column and the membrane set up needed to developed separately in aspen adsorption and aspen custom modeler respectively and then exported to aspen plus for realistic simulation. It was also found that practical information about equipment designs and performance curves was needed for effective costing estimates
