The study examines the role of Ateso folktales in conflict resolution among the Iteso of eastern Uganda. The Teso folktales fall back as far as their migration from Ethiopia. These folktales were passed down from generation to generation through word of mouth. These were said during the evening hours around campfires and in family gatherings during the festive periods. The elders were the primary custodians charged with passing on these folktales to the next generation. They were used to encourage people to work hard and promote unity, peace, and civility. Over time, these folktales have been adopted by the smaller sub-divisions of the Teso people in the different regions of Uganda and Kenya. Teso has been faced with several insurgencies that have affected the people’s way of life and led to detachment from culture as a result of the displacement and consequent resettlement of the Teso people across Uganda. These folktales stand as constant reminders of the ways and beliefs of the Teso people. These folktales depicted the day-to-day activities of the people and recognized the roles of their elders and EDEKE” in every conflict resolved. Consequently, these folktales have dictated the structure of leadership among the Iteso people, with special recognition of Emorimor and his assistants to the level of clan heads and clan askaris. These have designated roles on the committee and have a great impact on settling land issues among the Iteso people. The body responsible for this is the ICU (ITESO CULTURAL UNION) closely monitored by the king- Emorimor.en_US
