The existence of different apartment space design typologies in Central Kampala has been brought about by the rapid urbanization and fast-growing populations caused by the unfavorable economic situation in developing cities (Komarudin, 1997). Most developing cities face the challenge of overcrowding and premium limited living space in the city due to the high urban density and scarcity of land. Due to this approach, this research paper focused on studying the functionality and adaptability of the spatial arrangements and areas of floor plans of the existing apartment design typologies to meet the users‟ requirements for their living environment. The major objectives being; to study the apartment spatial design principles used in Central Kampala, investigate how successful the design of spaces have been in the selected apartment building design, reveal the possible challenges encountered by users in the apartments and propose ways for the effective design of apartment building spaces in Central Kampala especially Nakasero suburb. In line with the objectives, the major criteria for investigation took on a qualitative analysis methodology than a quantitative measure entailing literature review on the topic, comparative case study analysis and sketch design retrospective to analyze the extents and quality of apartment floor plan typologies on urban sites in Central Kampala and interviews with key personnel involved in the topic of interest. Major findings tending from the research indicate preserved structural, spatial and aesthetic (quality) soundness of these apartment spaces though with a limitation in capability to include vertical extensions due to the construction techniques employed furthermore, their flexibility in adapting to new consumer demands is ignited to their size as well as fabric that does not allow for heavy mechanized activity to be adapted. Conclusions drawn from the study highlight the need for favorable government development policies, community involvement and stakeholder cooperation in order to realize the strategy of space utilization and apartment design. Furthermore, legislation is form of planning regulations which are not being enforced not adhered to should be strengthened and established. Recommendations such as employment of housing designers and specialists and establishment of more housing design contracting firms to save the major features of favorable space design and government designation of the site as a platform for establishing urban development.en_US
