Power Outage Detection System for Low Voltage Networks in Uganda
View/
Open
This project report is about a system designed and demonstrated to detect and notify power utility companies about power outages and blackouts on Low Voltage Networks (240Volts – Phase to Ground and 415Volts – Phase to Phase) in Uganda. The causes of power outages are categorized into three namely; short circuit faults, open circuit faults and faults due to overload. The project mainly concentrates on the short circuit faults and the faults due to overload on the low voltage distribution transformer. The system is demonstrated on single phase voltage 240V with the actual network or whole system simulated using CYME power engineering software. The design has a 2.5Ampere circuit breaker, a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) 800L module, an arduino board, a 100A current transformer, a heating filament, an Alternating Current to Direct Current Source and a control center. The circuit breaker acts as a protective unit, the current transformer measures AC current passing through the circuit while monitoring the current passing through the circuit. The output of the current transformer is connected to the arduino board. With the information from the current transformer, the arduino decides whether to send an overload text or message in case of an overload condition or a short circuit text in case of occurrence of a short circuit using the GSM module to transmit these messages to the power utility companies. The AC-DC power source is used for powering the arduino board. Since the heating filament acts like a variable resistor, it’s used to demonstrate the overload condition. (3.605Mb)
