This project report is about human motion detection and instant alert Desktop se- curity system that uses a webcam connected via a USB cable. Security is a measure of how safe a person or premises are and it is a very key factor for business success and peace in the environment. As a result of independent components in current sys- tems like CCTV surveillance cameras, there was a lack of uni ed system to achieve real time surveillance and real time noti cation thus a need for us to Develop a stand-alone system that base on human motion detection using a webcam to initi- ate video recording and sending a real time noti cation. These system components where implemented using java programming language to design both front and back end application with the use of OpenCV, JavaCV for image processing, Bulksms for noti cation, JDBC connectivity and MySQL database Server for database man- agement for the application as a whole. For prototype design, use case diagram, Activity diagram and Entity relationship diagram were used to design the prototype architecture, process interactions and logical ow of the system prototype. Human motion detection approach used here is backgrounding/ image subtraction technique. This algorithm provided a better way of detecting motion in a static background. The system has been tested under di erent scenarios that is under good internet connection, day lighted rooms, electric lighted rooms, and in darkness. As the result shows in chapter 5, it is concluded that this system needs a well-lighted area with a good internet connectivity and a static background.en_US
