A dissertation submitted to the School of Psychology in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the award of a Bachelors of Community Psychology Degree of Makerere University.
The study examines the relationship between perceived social support, self-esteem and hopelessness among adolescents. The study adopted a descriptive correlational survey design that embraced a quantitative approach using a sample of 118 respondents both boys and girls. Simple random sampling technique was used to select respondents and a self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS). Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficients (r) was used to test the significance of the hypotheses. Results from the study revealed that there is no significant relationship between perceived social support and self-esteem (r= 139, p > 0.01), perceived social support and Hopelessness (r = .005, p > 0.01), and self-esteem and hopelessness (r = .070. p > 0 .01).
