Across the globe, it has been found that Small Scale and Medium enterprise partly contribute to the growth of a nation and they are important in ameliorating the effect of poverty to the grassroots people. As a result, Uganda has encouraged its nationals to get involved into SMEs but they neither grow to expand or the proprietors leave the market. It is upon this perspective that this study was carried out to establish determinants for the growth of SMEs in Kampala City. The researcher used three objectives and these include to; examine the effect of taxation and licenses on the growth of SMEs; examine the effect of capital structure on SMEs; and examine the effect of demographic factors on growth of SMEs in Nateete market. A case study of research design was used in which both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used during the research study. A sample of 50 participants were used to inform the study and the findings shows that SMEs have been hindered by taxation and licenses. According to analysis which was done through a linear regression analysis, it was found that apart from capital (p-value of 0.049), the values of licenses (p-value of 0.924) and taxation (p-value of 0.497) were above the standard value of alpha (0.05). Which means that they were not significant to growth and development of SMEs of Nateete market. It is upon these results that the study recommends for an assessment of the SMEs before levying the tax or license.en_US
