A final year project report Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Award of a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineeringen_US
Cost and time of geotechnical investigations are important factors in the construction industry and for small scale projects, these have remained high due to the fact that standard methods required for the investigations are lengthy and expensive. The DCP is being adapted to reduce the time, cost and much more because of its simplicity and giving instant results. However, its adoption still faces challenges due to the fact that existing models for estimating bearing capacity are not reliable as they were developed for particular foundation width and fixed factor of safety and are being used in a way that a single modal applies to the wet and dry regimes of soil yet these have purely different penetration rate for soils under uniform conditions with the exceptional of moisture regime. This study focused on development of a model for ultimate bearing capacity and varying width of the foundation for the two different moisture regimes. In accordance to BS 1377: 1990, different tests were carried out on the soil sample to determine the properties of the soil. The soil was compacted in layers of 200mm thickness with each layer at a different moisture content and dry density in a 1.2m steel cube mould. The DCP test was the carried out on the sample in the mould according to ASTM D 6951 to determine Dynamic Cone Penetration Index (DCPI) for each layer, followed by coring of each layer to determine bearing capacity using the direct shear test. A linear regression analysis was made between the DCPI and bearing capacity of the soil for different foundation widths under the two different moisture regimes.en_US
