Assessment of the effect of mobile money tax on the profitability of agents in Uganda

The aim of the study was to assess the effect of mobile money tax on the profitability of agents in kisaasi village. The study looked at the dependent variable as agency profitability and independent variables as social demographic factors (age, sex, marital status, religion, level of education and occupation), income levels and standard of living. A sample of 99 respondents were interviewed using a questionnaire which was closed ended and the response rate was 98 filled and 1 unfilled, the data was captured in excel and analyzed with SPSS packages using frequency tables, percentages and the chi-square test statistic at the 0.05 level of significance. Uni-variate, bi-variate, multivariate analysis and linear regression model were used to establish the relationship or association between profitability of agents with social demographic factors, income level and standard of living. Majority (58.16%) of the respondents were female, 55.1% were aged 20-29 years, 55.1% were singles, 64.3% offered MTN Mobile Money, 30.6% had attained secondary level 26.5% had self-employment as their pre-occupation,58.2% owned the mobile money business by themselves, 28.6% operated the business in the range of 1-2 years, majority(82.65%) made profits, before the tax agents were getting above 50 customers and after tax was levied the agents are getting between 20 and 30 customers. Effect of the MMT on income level, the study found out that most respondents agreed that MMT has greatly improved their saving ability. The study results have showed that none of the respondents strongly disagreed (SD) that MM business has greatly improved their saving ability. The effect of MMT on standard of living, the study indicated that the respondents could easily afford to buy utensils and daily family meals. The profitability had a significant association with age, education level, MM service offered, years of operating MMTS and ownership type. The study concluded that MM service has positively impacted the vendors income level and the standard of living despite of the new tax imposed on the service. The researcher recommended the MM service providers like Telecommunication companies should improve on their network system. The MM providers should improve on the security situation of the MM service so as to protect their users against fraudsters. There is need for more research to be carried out to investigate the impact of MM business on the Economic growth of the country.
