An analysis of factors associated with entrepreneurship development among youth in Uganda : A case study of Kampala, Uganda
Abstract
This study was conducted in Kampala City. The objective of the study was to establish how demographic, socio-cultural and economic factors associated with entrepreneurship development among youth in Kampala City. The research methodology for the study was descriptive cross-sectional research design. The sample size was 96 respondents and both cluster and stratified sampling techniques were applied in selecting the respondents who were included in the sample. The researcher used questionnaires to collect data and data was analyzed using SPSS version 20 at both univariate and bivariate level.The research findings also indicated that age of an individual significantly influences entrepreneurship development since the P-Value (0.000) was less than the critical value (0.05).The study findings also indicated that an individual’s level of education significantly influences participation in entrepreneurship development since the P-Value (0.002) was less than the critical value (0.05).Also, personal attitude towards entrepreneurship significantly influences entrepreneurship development among youth since the P-Value (0.007) was less than the critical value (0.05).The study findings also indicated that that presence of role models have a significant influence on entrepreneurship development among youth in Kampala city (p-value = 0.000). Findings revealed that majority of the respondents disagreed that the taxation policies in the Uganda favors entrepreneurship development (Mean = 1.99) and that taxation policy doesn’t affect entrepreneurship development among youth since the P-Value (0.501) was not less than the critical value (0.05). Study findings also revealed that access to finance has a significant influence on entrepreneurship development among youth in Kampala City (p-value = 0.001). The study concluded that both young men and women participate in entrepreneurship in Kampala city and that unfavorable taxation policies would be discouraging youth entrepreneurial participation. The study recommended that that further studies be undertaken on more factors influencing youths’ participation in entrepreneurship, particularly on effectiveness of government programs, policies and laws in Uganda.
