Statistical analysis of household fuel and energy use in Jinja Municipality

This study analyses the household fuel and energy use in Jinja municipality. It has a single general objective of examiningthe determinants of Household energy and fuel use. It applies a multinomial logit model and a binary logit model to analyse the socio-economic determinants of household main fuel and determinants of household main cooking fuel respectively. The results show that in addition to household monthly total expenditure on fuels (proxy income) of 18,174.6 Ugshs, there are several factors such as household size, education level of household head and employment status of household head which are important in determining household main fuel. Electricity provides the main source of energy for lighting at a cost of 14,311 Ugshs followed by kerosene at 7,273 Ughs. Charcoal was the main source of energy for cooking at 52.9% followed by gas at 42.7%. Kerosene was the main household alternative source of energy for cooking and the type of food cooked was the main reason for switching cooking fuels in households. Households spent more on gas and less on kerosene compared to other fuels. The majority of respondents were not aware of the effects of using solid fuels on people especially in a confined space but were aware of the effects of using solid fuels on the environment. Household size, education level of household head and age of household head were found to determine household main cooking fuel.
