A dissertation report submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering of Makerere University.en_US
Text normalization is the process of converting non-standard words such as numbers, dates, time, measurements, currencies and abbreviations into standard words so that their pronunciations can be derived by a typical means. Text normalization is therefore an important component of any text-to-speech system. Without text normalization, the resulting voice may sound unintelligent. In this project, a rule-based Luganda text normalization module that detects and verbalizes numbers, dates, time, measurements, currencies and abbreviations into Luganda words was designed and implemented using python programming language. Implementation of the Luganda text normalization module will definitely ease the incorporation of the Luganda language in text to speech systems or speech synthesizers.en_US
