dc.description.abstractThe Semiliki basin is within the EA3BCD located south of Lake Albert forming one of the three major basins in the Albertine rift of the EARS. The Basin accommodates a maximum sedimentary pile of approximately 5,000m dating from Miocene to present underlain by basement high grade metamorphic rocks. Rapid subsidence, matched with limited clastic and non-clastic sediment input created deep stratified lakes with deposition of organic rich source rocks. The basement lithology is composed of granitic gneisses, schist and amphibolites in form of the mafic intrusions that belong to the Buganda –Toro system. These rocks are highly fractured with dominant structures being faults, joints, folds and foliation. Both major and minor faults were observed in the granitic gneiss basement rocks of Ntoroko, with a NNE-SSW general trend. The method of data collection of the basement rocks along foothills of the northern Rwenzori block was by use of rudimentary consisting majorly of identifying the structures and measuring their trends. Gravity, seismic and petrophysical data provided by the Department were analysed using Oasis montaj and Techlog software. Kibuku study area, consists of fluvial- deep lacustrine depositional deposits. Relatively rapid facies changes common these sediments provide the potential for stratigraphic traps with or without structural components. The existence of the Sempaya male and female hot springs in Bundibugyo contribute to significant geo-thermal energy for maturation of petroleum in the organic rich source rocks of the Semiliki basin. Geophysical Literature studies carried out provide for the qualitative and quantitative interpretation of Seismic sections of the Semiliki basin. Furthermore, facies/lithological interpretation of the seismic sections from the Gulf of Mexico was performed. Gravity data interpretation for probable anomalies provided preliminary evidence for existence of sedimentary basin. Sedimentary magnetic anomalies were interpreted from magnetic maps of the Semiliki basin. Generally geophysical studies indicated a greater and varying thickness of the sedimentary rocks accompanied by numerous structures predominantly steep faults as interpreted in the seismic survey.en_US
