Roads play an important role in the growth of developing countries as they are the most convenient means of transport for movement of people and freight within and outside cities. Road construction therefore is a prime concern for the authorities. However, it is not easy to carry out such tasks as road construction due to the various problems therein one of the most severe ones being variations. While various individuals have looked at variations on building construction projects, this research focuses on determining the sources and causes of variations on road construction projects. Literature about the works done by previous researchers was reviewed out of which a data collection form was developed. Records of some of the roads under KCCA projects classified under LOTS 1,2,3,4 and 5 that have been completed in the last five years were reviewed in order to identify the difference between the initial (at tender) and the actual cost (at completion) of the different activities in the projecten_US
