Application of digital mapping techniques for evaluation and analysis of traffic flow pattern in Kampala
Abstract
The requirement for detailed and accurate travel time, vehicle speed and delay data is growing
rapidly as analysis techniques and requirements change. Traditional methods of survey are time
consuming, labor intensive and inflexible due to their tight constraints. The use of GPS
equipment for automated data collection has reduced the cost of travel time surveys significantly
and increased the volume of data able to be collected. This paper presents methods of using low cost, handheld GPS units to obtain speed data for different roads. This data allows valid calculations of speed, and congestion index value without the need for costly instrumentation and constant recalibration.
