Appraisal of Road maintenance management system for Nakawa division.

Abstract

Maintenance operations are very important in relation to the cost of a road construction over its service life alongside other factors like function of design, quality of construction. The purpose of maintenance is to ensure that the road remains serviceable throughout its design life and it also prolongs the life of the road by reducing the rate of deterioration. This research project was about appraisal of road maintenance management system and it was carried out in Nakawa Division in Kampala district. The objectives of the study were to determine the existing road management system, then determine the best practice road maintenance management system and finally compare existing methods with the best practice and make recommendations. The researcher used both secondary and primary means of collecting data and primary data was got through use of questionnaires which were only given to the division engineer and the town clerk and interviews. Also only the division engineer and the town clerk were interviewed. Data got from questionnaires and interviews was analyzed to establish the existing road maintenance programs and the best road maintenance system was proposed. The main problem affecting road maintenance in Nakawa division relate to weak management systems, inadequate funding, inappropriate planning and inadequate resources and institutional framework within which roads are managed. The above challenges have to be fixed in order to have a road system that is safe, efficient and which gives confidence to its users
