Examining the effect of incomplete designs on efficiency of Project management in Kampala district.
Abstract
The construction industry has been developing day by day in Kampala city with an increase in
complexity of structures being constructed. There are different stages that are involved for a
construction project to be executed. With design among the stages involved, scholars have carried
out invaluable investigation about the problems facing the growing construction industry, but left
out incomplete designs with very little attention (George Otim, 2015).
This report examines the effect of incomplete designs on the efficiency of project management in
Kampala district. The focus is on the causes of incomplete designs on the different projects, the
effects of incomplete designs on the different projects, the ways in which incomplete designs have
been managed and the recommended solutions to reduce/manage the problem of incomplete
designs.
The study comprises of extensive review of literature on incomplete designs, primary data got
from questionnaires that were both open and closed ended. A sample of 71 architects and
contractors was involved and the selection was made by simple random sampling.
The analysis of the study was done by using Microsoft Excel 2016 where by the causes of
incomplete designs on different projects and the effects on incomplete designs were analyzed. The
results identified different causes of incomplete designs on different construction projects mainly,
shortened design time, less involvement of contractors during design time, less coordination
between the designers, smaller fees given to the designers, similar details from other plans, lack of
constructability in making designs and construction management competition. Also, the results
identified the effects of incomplete designs mainly, design changes, delay of the projects, change
of cost of the project, wastage of materials and conflicts between the parties.
The results recommended that designers should do more feasibility studies on the project before
making designs, usage of design and supervise contracts and design and build contracts, vetting
all the necessary design consultants on projects and allocating more resources like personnel and
time in the design stage.
