Analysis of urban renewal processes and change in Kampala city: a case study of Kisenyi 111.

Abstract

Urban renewal is often presented as a natural process through which the urban environment viewed as a living entity undergoes transformation. Urban renewal processes in Kisenyi III parish have been seen as an advocate for economic and social transformation of Kampala city in general. Over time, urban renewal in Kampala evolved into a policy based less on destruction and more on renovation and investment, and today it is an integral part of Kampala City Council Authority with aims of promoting social development and growth combined with economic or business incentives. The findings show that there is a correlation between the urban renewal processes in Kisenyi III parish and their effectiveness which has brought about tremendous change in the area. The research clearly indicates the social, economic, physical and environmental effectiveness of various urban renewal processes that are taking due course in Kisenyi III parish and those that have transformed its urban form from a renowned slum to an economically vibrant neighborhood close to the Kampala city CBD. The dominating renewal processes include redevelopment, renovation and rehabilitation among others that have been embarked on by both private investors and the government through Kampala City Council Authority. The study concludes that in order to attain social, economic, physical and environmental effectiveness of the urban renewal processes in Kisenyi III and any other slummy neighborhoods, there is need to put into consideration various aspects of sustainable urban renewal and effective implementation by the responsible authorities. It is hoped that the findings in this study will stimulate planners and other responsible technocrats about the need to make up realistic interventions that are necessary for effective change and transformation in derelict areas and thus improve the social- economic prosperity through urban renewal in Kampala city and other developing cities.
