A research report submitted to the Department of Construction Economics and Management in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Land Economics of Makerere University.en_US
Kampala’s population is growing very fast. It’s estimated to be growing at an annual rate of 5.6%, where much of this growth is attributed to demographic shifts in the form of rural – urban migration leading to urban sprawl. The GKMA is now estimated to be over 3 million people and it’s expected to triple within a generation and approach 20 million, by 2040. The high growth rate has attracted many developers to put up new structures in the city. Unfortunately, most of these developments have sprung up in un-planned manner leading to congestion in the city, although efforts to decongest Kampala through Strengthening the existing cores, developing new satellite towns/Cities, massive development of the KCCA and construction of the metropolitan road system like the urban freeway have been in plan for a long time. Development of satellite cities in particular; as fully-furnished, self-sustainable cities, is envisioned to bring recreation, living and consumption space, and do offer a viable way for Uganda government to meet the demands of urbanization. The research therefore focused on Kakungu satellite city in order to establish how much it has added or will add on to Government’s plans of decongesting Kampala. The major objective of the study was to critically explore the importance of satellite city development as a strategy for decongesting Kampala Capital City. Other objectives included; to examine the contribution of satellite city establishment to socio-economic and urban development; to investigate the opportunities of satellite city development for future surrounding towns; to investigate the role of satellite city in relieving pressure on Kampala’s infrastructure; and to examine the role of satellite cities in decongesting Kampala. A comprehensive literature review about the research problem formed part of the sturdy. The researcher believes that the right methodology was used in this study and data analyses properly done with the help of MS-EXCEL Program. Finally, basing on the findings and discussion, it is highly relevant to establish satellite cities as one of the strategies for decongesting Kampala Capital City; only if the recommendations are taken note of with uttermost care.en_US
