This study was designed to investigate the factors affecting academic performance of undergraduate students of Makerere University. Emphasis was put on trying to establish the relationship between teaching method, time management, student’s family background and academic performance of undergraduate students at Makerere University. The study employed the use of correlation design to establish the nature of the relationships. The validity and reliability of research instruments was established and data was collected from 67 respondents selected from all third year bachelors of statistics students (2017/2018) at Makerere University using convenient sampling method. To analyze the data, linear regression was used with the aim of establishing the relationship between teaching method, time management, student’s family background and academic performance of undergraduate students at Makerere University. This formed the basis of the detailed analysis and conclusions and recommendations. On the basis of the findings, it can be concluded that time management, teaching method and family background influence the academic performance of students at Makerere University. On family background this study found out that it is the parent’s level of income that influence the academic performance of the student but not the education level of a parent. Teaching methods according to the study findings had three components that is; the organization of lecturers during the session, the questioning method and the technology used in teaching that influence academic performance of students while no relationship was found for the role played by lecturers and academic performance. Following the school program, preparing for the exams well in time and balancing the leisure time and study time were found to be the components of time management that influence academic performance among the students of Makerere University The study recommends that students should always follow the school program set by the administration as it helps to identify the right time to do the right thing like at what time is a lecture on, when is the test going to be done and when final exams will begin as following the school program improves the academic performance of students. Students should always prepare for the exams in advance as well as balancing the study time and the leisure time, this improves the academic performance of a student as per this research. The study further recommends that lecturers should be organized and prepare well before going for the lecture sessions and they should also use the appropriate technology in delivering the materials to students. Proper organization of lecturers and use of good technology in teaching improves the academic performance of students. The questioning method used by lecturers should be able to fit the majority as some students end up writing right answers to the wrong question which lead to poor performance. Therefore, the question method should be discussed in the stuff meeting before lecturers set exams in order to improve students’ performance. Also, the research recommends that the government should provide some incentives to some students who come from humble families where they cannot afford all the necessities. Some students miss class to do a side business in order to earn some money to support. Providing support to these students by the government will improve their academic performance at all levels.en_US
