Uganda’s solar energy resource potential is about 800MW however there are only four operational solar power plants in the country which are capable of generating 50MW of power [1]. There is a huge deficit of power that is not utilized and therefore Katine Green Field Project aims at filling this gap. Katine green field project is a proposed solar power plant on 20 acres of land in Eastern Uganda located 8.2km from Katine Trading centre. This study is focused on collection and analysis of solar insolation and load demand data in the case study area so as to model the sizing of a grid connected solar photovoltaic power plant with storage capacity. Before designing the Solar PV power plant and its evacuation, the main components in a large scale PV plant are described. The components include PV modules, Solar inverters, Boost Converters, Charge Controllers, transformers, switch gear and DC and AC cables. To achieve the project objectives, Google maps alongside solar map were used to capture the exact location of the plant and hence determine the amount of solar energy that would be generated while Umeme distribution network data was used to determine the maximum demand of the area. For this study, a battery bank is included among the system components so as to solve the problems associated with fluctuations in the amount of power generated and the diminishing solar power output as we approach peak hours. The solar PV power plant was designed and simulated in Matlab Simulink. Emphasis was put on the design of the individual components of the Solar PV power plant. In order to achieve 8.5MW, the PV power plant was divided into four blocks each 2.125MW. A phase locked loop was included in the design of the solar power plant in order to synchronise the grid voltages with the voltages from the PV power plant. The 33kV Soroti-Atirir network was extracted from ArcGIS and then modelled using DIg SILENT software. Load flow analysis was performed on the network before and after interconnecting the solar plant. The results obtained for the voltage profiles at the different buses, losses, and line loading were compared before and after interconnecting the solar power plant. Finally, an economic analysis of the solar power plant is carried out to analyse its feasibility.en_US
