| dc.description.abstract | The study was centered on the effect of socio-economic background on girl child academic performance in secondary schools of Kampala central division. It was based on three objectives that included; how socio-economic background affect girl child academic performance in secondary schools of Kampala Central Division, the challenges of socio-economic background on girl child academic performance in Kampala Central Division and establish possible solutions for better academic performance of girl child in secondary schools of Kampala Central Division.
Data was analyzed from interview guide questionnaires as they were the major instruments of data collection. Each theme that emerged was considered below under the stated specific study objectives. The study covered a sample of 8 Participants and these included; Head teachers from Secondary Schools of Makerere High Way College, Kololo High School, and Kampala Secondary school, Old Kampala Secondary School, Kitante High Secondary School, Makerere College School, Bukoto High School and City High School.
The study findings indicated that some cultures assume the responsibilities of mothers and wives, some parents refuse to pay school fees for girls, lack of vision and prospects for future life reduce girls interests to participate and perform in education, some parents perceive that girl’s education is seen as a waste of time, inequality and favoritism of one sex by parents were the ways how Socio-economic background Affect girl child Academic Performance in Secondary Schools of Kampala Central Division. Teacher absenteeism, traveling long distance to school, negative attitude towards education and poor background determines education attainment were the Challenges of Socio-economic background on Girl child Academic Performance in Secondary Schools Kampala Central Division. While Suggested Possible Solutions for better academic Performance of Girl child in Secondary Schools of Kampala Central Division were parents should view education for girl children as an investment for future, an educated woman protects children to live a health life, reduction of malnutrition and infant mortality, educated women equally contribute to the family income and development of the family, educating girls is a form of empowerment which enables them to achieve women emancipation and education for girls enables them to engage in more agriculture and other productive activities. | en_US |
